CELEBRATIONS
A bridge between the past, present, and future.
Holidays and traditions, whether celebrated for religious, cultural, familial, or other reasons, are more than just days on the calendar or events to attend. They are celebrations of our community connections and family history. They create lasting memories by passing down customs and practices across generations, essentially acting as a bridge between the past, present, and future.
While celebrations may seem to be just like a chance to have fun, they often hold deeper meaning and significance by acknowledging achievements, milestones, cultural traditions, or shared experiences beyond just the surface level of excitement. As an example, while La Catrina is celebrated as a central symbol of the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico, La Catrina was originally created as a political commentary on the Mexican elite who chose European values over their native culture.
My project will highlight, through photography, celebrations in the United States and several countries, to gain insight into some of the world’s human traditions and rituals, discover some of the stories behind them while paying respect to them and the people who keep them alive.
