DERAILING STRESS
Urban life is exciting. Yet, it is also a source of tremendous stress. We create roads and buildings which, in turn, imprison our minds and bodies. We need space. From New York to Paris, Chicago to Rotterdam and Zurich, urban planners are converting abandoned rail tracks to urban parks and trails. It all started in the 19th century with Paris’ Promenade Plantee and Petite Ceinture where a portion of the rail tracks around the city was converted into green space for Parisians. This was followed much later by the Highline in New York, where a district along abandoned cargo tracks was gentrified to become a design marvel. The Bloomingdale trail in Chicago and Luchtsingel in Rotterdam soon followed suit. Their common point is their elevation. These trails rise above the traffic and provide parallel worlds to escape the madness below.
