Literature and photography, the verbal and the visual, words and light... they were destined to be together.
Photography and writing are the perfect match, as exemplified by works such as the renowned "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" by James Agee and Walker Evans, or "Long Story Bit By Bit: Liberia Retold" by Tim Hetherington, among many others. We could argue that the maximum exponent of visual storytelling is the ability to combine your photography with a powerful text to accompany it.
As authors, being able to expand on the nuances of your body of work, possessing the sophistication to offer different readings, and taking your audience even further into your story is every photographer's dream.
In this workshop, we are going to teach and provide you with the tools to do both and create something unique. For this workshop, we invite photographers to join us in Erfoud during the Date Festival to create a reportage of their choosing. Participants will be mentored by the immensely talented Kayla Green (via zoom) to hone their writing skills and guide them in developing their story ideas. Simultaneously, resident mentors and co-founders Jorge Delgado-Ureña and Christelle Enquist will work with them on the photographic aspect of their narrative. By the end of this workshop, participants will have a complete story: both written and visual.
Photographers of all levels are welcome to join this workshop, as are writers who wish to develop their photography skills.
Jorge Delgado-Ureña
Jorge Delgado-Ureña is a photographer, writer, and educator, and Director of Photography and co-founder of The Raw Society. His work is rooted in documentary storytelling, personal narrative, guiding photographers toward a more intentional and meaningful creative practice.
With almost two decades of travel and fieldwork across regions including Iraqi Kurdistan, Mexico, Nepal, Morocco, and Ukraine, Jorge’s photography explores themes of identity, culture, ritual, and the human experience during moments of transition or conflict. His photographs have been published in several local and international magazines, including National Geographic, Ijsberg Magazine, and La Vanguardia, among others. His work has been exhibited at venues such as El Colegio de Periodistas in Barcelona, Spain, Germany, the UK, the USA and Nepal.
Jorge is currently authoring The Photographer’s Way: On Storytelling, Presence, and the Creative Life, a book that intertwines personal experience, philosophical insight, and practical guidance for photographers seeking deeper meaning and a stronger creative voice.
Christelle Enquist
Christelle Enquist is a Spanish-Swedish photographer based in Menorca, Spain and the President and Co-Founder of The Raw Society. Through workshops, mentorship programs, publications, and global events, she has helped build a vibrant network of photographers united by a passion for authentic visual storytelling.
Raised in Singapore, Enquist speaks four languages and considers photography her fifth. Drawn to human connection and cultural storytelling, she uses her camera as a bridge between people, places, and perspectives.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in Australia, the United States, Belgium, and Nepal. In 2024, a retrospective celebrating eight years of her photographic work was presented in Menorca. Her photography was also featured in the acclaimed book Women Street Photographers, published by Penguin Random House in 2021.
Alongside her photographic practice, Enquist is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of visual storytellers. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Raw Society Magazine and as Creative Director and Curator of Raw Photo Fest, where she oversees the festival’s artistic vision, programming, and exhibitions.
Kayla Green (Via Zoom)
Kayla Green has worked in the trenches of local journalism for 14 years. She earned her journalism degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where she was born and raised.
Starting as a reporter, she has worked her way up to her current role as executive editor. She is part of a three-person leadership team that has turned failing family-owned newspapers into profitable business models through advertising and newsroom makeovers, transforming traditionally print-only outlets into full-fledged multimedia companies. She currently serves in that role for two properties, The Sumter Item in Sumter, South Carolina, and Gulf Coast Media, in Baldwin County, Alabama, that publish a total of five newspapers nine times a week.
She has been awarded on the state and national level for her writing and newsroom leadership, including Editor & Publisher’s 25 Under 35 Next Gen of News Professionals and reporting on topics ranging from art and entertainment to heroin addiction and child trafficking. A writer at heart, she finds fulfillment in working with rising journalists to hone their writing and reporting skills, helping them identify their strengths and use them to be the best versions of their individuality.
The objective of this part of the workshop is to create a photo reportage and will cover the following:
What is a visual story?
There are many interesting stories but not all of them are equally photogenic. We will find out how to approach a story and make it as visually powerful as possible.
Finding your personal style
Having a personal style is not an easy endeavor but it is critical. From your distances to the subject and intellectual interests as well as other influences, we will discuss and review your past sets of pictures and will work on location to recognize your unique style.
Developing a visual language for a Story.
It’s important to find the right tools to communicate a story properly, from the choice of monochrome or colour to how to maintain a personal voice and style in the process.
What to look for and techniques for a well-rounded narrative
There are parts of the process of developing a story that don’t follow any rules, but there are others that are absolutely necessary to have a cohesive body of work that will be understandable for the audience.
Revision and constructive criticism
Both in groups and individually throughout the workshop.
The objective of this part of the workshop is to create a written piece to accompany the photographic story that you will be working on. All participants are expected to fully immerse themselves, push their boundaries and rise up to the challenges given.
What is literary non-fiction writing?
A good story opens your mind and teaches you something about the world you didn’t know before. A great story makes you feel. We will discover how you can incorporate journalism techniques and literary tools to elevate your storytelling.
Finding your voice
Are there writers or other artists who when you consume their work just know it’s theirs? We will explore the concepts of voice and tone and how you can develop your own.
The power of observation and active listening
It is important to enter a project with an open mind for seeing and listening. We will practice both and learn how to incorporate them into your work.
Revision and construction criticism
Learn how to edit your own work and how to go through the revision process. Both in the group and individually throughout the workshop.
