Iraqi Kurdistan
20 – 28 April 2024

Full of winding streets and yellowish brick houses, standing on a mound of thousands of years of rubble and remains, the citadel of Ebril looms above the centre of the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. It is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world, having been populated for over eight thousand years.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Are we mad? Not at all! Do we want to provide workshops in uncommon and fascinating places, you bet we do! Despite what many people might think and thanks in part to media reports that often paint a dark picture, Iraqi Kurdistan is actually relatively safe and home to some of the kindest people you will ever meet.

Iraqi Kurdistan is an entirely autonomous region located in Iraq and is inhabited primarily by the Kurdish ethnic minority.  The citadel of Erbil is a World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the world. The towns around the capital boast some of the most breathtaking natural backdrops with a smaller-town feel that will enable us to really delve deep into the Iraqi Kurdish culture.

During the workshop, participants will be working on honing their visual narrative skills and learning how to build a story while discovering a different and unique side of Iraqi Kurdistan.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

This will be a hands-on workshop in which all participants will be mentored by Jorge Delgado-Ureña along with support from Christelle Enquist.

As the objective of this workshop is to work on visual storytelling, each participant will be creating their own magazine.

Participants will be expected to fully immerse themselves, push their boundaries and rise up to the challenges that they are given.

This also means that the workshop itinerary is not fixed and will be adapted according to the opportunities that arise while on the ground, and the stories that participants want to focus on.

  • Individual portfolio revision: The workshop will begin with a revision of your work with the aim of evaluating your level and in order to discuss your objectives during your stay in Iraqi Kurdistan.

  • Visual Storytelling: Discussion on how to create a visual line in your stories and overall work whilst developing your own style. This will be one of the main objectives during the workshop and assignments will be given to each participant to develop your storytelling technique over the course of the seven days.

  • Revision and constructive criticism: both in group and individually through out the workshop.

CONCEPTS COVERED

Dynamic composition, light and ways around bad lighting conditions, colour theory and its application to photography, selection & editing, creating visual narratives and the differences depending on the final support.
