Rainbow in a Bubble

Rainbow in the Rubble is a powerful and intimate exploration of one of the most vulnerable and least visible communities in the Middle East today. Since 2023, I have been documenting the lives of two young queer Iraqis as they navigate identity, love, and survival in a city shaped by decades of conflict, religious conservatism, and rapid social change.

This story unfolds slowly and deliberately due to the extreme sensitivity and danger surrounding its subjects. Being openly LGBTQ in Iraq can carry severe consequences—social exclusion, violence, or worse. Same-sex relationships are officially criminalized by the Iraqi government, and being openly LGBTQ can carry severe consequences—ranging from social exclusion and harassment to violence or worse.Through rare, first-hand access and long-term trust, the project reveals the quiet courage it takes to live authentically in a place where being yourself can cost you everything. Despite repression and constant risk, my characters find ways to build connection, resistance, and even moments of joy.

Rather than focusing on war or geopolitics, Rainbow in the Rubble offers a humanizing portrait of resilience—an Iraq rarely seen by international audiences. It sheds light on everyday life, emotional intimacy, and the universal desire for belonging, even in the most hostile environments.

I have exclusive access to my subjects and have been working on this project for over two years. I am now preparing for a final trip back to Baghdad in April to complete the story.

About the budget

Each photographer determines their own budget, and if the objective minimum amount is reached, the photographer receives it in its entirety.

Hawre’s budget is $3,000, which covers travel, security considerations, and final production costs.

He will produce the story for Issue V if at least 50% ($1,500) of the funds are raised by the 20th of May 2026.

If this fundraising goal is not met, funders will be given the option to either be reimbursed or to put the donation towards the production of the magazine.
