Sajad Ahmad

I was born in the UK and came of age in Peshawar during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and the influx of millions of refugees. Growing up amid stories of displacement and resilience shaped my understanding of how places carry history and communities endure upheaval, and revealed to me the power of photography to witness and hold memory.

Since returning to the UK in 2000, I have worked as a family doctor alongside a long-term documentary practice. I am ethnically Afghan, with ancestral roots in Jalalabad, and my family history is intertwined with migration and displacement.

My work explores how people and places change over time, through projects on resilience, trade and commerce, colour in everyday life, and the experiences of those seeking sanctuary. These projects are united by a sustained curiosity and a commitment to bearing witness to belonging, loss, and endurance.
